Chinese ditching fixed phones for mobile 11/24/2011

This has been a year of soaring profits for China's telecom industry, according to statistics released by the country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Nov. 22.

The total revenue of China's mobile communications sector for the first 10 months of the year rose 14 percent from a year earlier to more than 592.2 billion yuan. In terms of its proportion to the national telecom industry's total revenue, mobile communications revenue increased from 70 percent last year to more than 72 percent.

Meanwhile, the total revenue of China's fixed-line sector rose nearly 1 percent from a year earlier to nearly 226.6 billion yuan, accounting for nearly 28 percent of the total revenue of the country's telecom industry, compared with more than 30 percent during the first 10 months of last year.

As of October 2011, statistics show that the number of phone users in China has increased this year by nearly 11 million and has almost reached 1.3 billion. The number of fixed line subscribers dropped 743,000, while the number of mobile phone users rose nearly 11.7 million.

Furthermore, more and more Chinese customers are switching from dial-up to broadband Internet. From January to October, the number of broadband users in China increased by more than 26.2 million to 152.5 million, while the number of dial-up Internet users fell 284,000 to about 5.6 million.
