This Yearbook of High-technology Industry is based on the Statistics Catalogue of High-technology Industry Classification, which has been published by the National Bureau of Statistics in 2002. The purposes of the Yearbook are to summarize the development and international competitive position of China’s hi-tech industry and to facilitate the goals of the state macro administration in formulating policy and programming in support of China’s hi-tech industry. The Yearbook describes the development of China’s hi-tech industry during the period from 1995 to 2007. Statistical series for the years 1995 to 2007 include production, sales, science and technology, employment, investment, export, and relative international comparative measures of this fast-growing industry. The Yearbook should serve as a useful source for the public planning and administration sector as well as the broader business and research communities for understanding recent developments in China’s hi-tech industry.The Yearbook contains six parts. The first part focuses on the production and sales of hi-tech industry, for which the data spanning 1995 cover all independent accounting enterprises, and for 2000-2007 reporting covers all state-owned enterprises and non-state-owned enterprises with annual sales over 5 million RMB, among which data grouped by type of registration of state-owned and state-controlled enterprises in 1995 covers only state-owned enterprises. The second part of the Yearbook focuses on science and technology activities in hi-tech enterprises, in which the statistics cover large and medium-sized enterprises. The third part focuses on employment for all included enterprises. The fourth part of the Yearbook focuses on the investment of fixed assets in hi-tech industry, for which the data from 1995 to 2002 covers projects with investment in capital construction and renovation over 500,000 RMB, for which the data from 2003 to 2007 covers all projects over 500,000 RMB. The fifth part focuses on the products export of hi-tech industry, for which the coverage of the export data is the same as the first part and the coverage of the data of sales revenue from new products for export is the same as the second part. The sixth part focuses on international comparisons among China and the OECD countries.The scope of this Yearbook does not cover the small-sized enterprises with annual sales under 5 million yuan.
